A night of vocal jazz at the Sprinkler Artist Factory

May 12th 2018

$15 Suggested Donation at Door

The evening of May 12th Sprinkler Artist Factory is inviting all jazz and live music lovers for a special concert. Simona Minns, Lithuanian born jazz vocalist and composer is presenting a selection of jazz arrangements and original compositions combined with Lithuanian zither kankls. Her style is known for its unique theatrical flavor, genre-bending and virtuosic vocal scat improvisation. Simonas latest work, A Hunger Artist," blends her haunting vocals with elements of Lithuanian folk, vaudeville and even rock. Simona will be accompanied by Anastassiya Ana Petrova, pianist from Kazakhstan. The female jazz duo started during their studies at Berklee College of Music.

Classically trained on Lithuanian zither, Simona Minns earned her BA in jazz vocals at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater. Shortly after receiving the European Touring Scholarship, she moved to the United States to study at Berklee College of Music where she majored in Contemporary Composition and Production. Simona recently founded Syntheater, a contemporary performance company which brings her compositions to life through modern dance. In addition to performing and directing, Simona composes for drama plays, string quartets, jazz combo, big bands, and non-traditional instrumental settings. Her performance at the Sprinkler is a part of her spring tour between Australia, New Zealand, Lithuania and Washington DC.

John Fenton from Auckland jazzlocal32.com wrote: She is billed as a Jazz Singer, composer, arranger and artistic director, and she is unafraid to mash up or blend genres. All of the above descriptors were on show when she performed at the Backbeat Bar and everything she did, communicated an innate sense of fun and adventure. She is a natural performer, but behind that lies careful preparation. (https://jazzlocal32.com/2018/03/01/simona-minns-a-hunger-artist/)

Anastassiya Petrova is a jazz pianist, keyboardist, and organist from Kazakhstan. She is a participant of international festivals in Italy, Bulgaria, Russia, the US and a composer who is inspired by contemporary jazz pianists such as C. Corea, H.Hancock and B. Mehldau. Anastassiya is currently finishing her studies at the Berklee College of Music and Global Jazz Institute.

The duo will be presenting a selection of popular 50s era jazz songs as well as several originals from Simonas debut album A Hunger Artist.
